Newberry Sheriff Lee Foster (left) recognizes Lieutenant Michael Clayton with the 2016 Larry Bragg Deputy of the Year award

The Larry Bragg Deputy of the Year Award is an award named in recognition of Deputy Lawrence Bragg III, who died in the line of duty in June 1989. The award is presented to a Deputy Sheriff who has shown dedication, loyalty, and leadership above and beyond the call of duty. The individual epitomizes the image of a law enforcement officer and the standards of the Sheriff’s Office.

When considered for this award, the quality and quantity of work contributed by the individual, leadership abilities, and the overall performance as a commissioned employee was considered. Participation in extra Sheriff’s Office activities and duties were also considered when making this nomination.

The recipient of the 2016 Larry Bragg Deputy of the Year Award is Lieutenant Michael Clayton.

Clayton is a lifetime resident of Newberry County and a graduate of Whitmire High School.

Clayton came to work with the Newberry County Detention n Center as a Corrections Officer in 2009 and in September of that same year, transitioned to the Sheriff’s Office. A 2010 graduate of the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy, Clayton was assigned to the Patrol Division of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office as a Patrol Deputy. This is where his skills were put on full display. Since his joining the agency, he has become a member of the agency’s C.I.R.T. (Critical Incident Response Tactical) team where he trains constantly and participates in numerous special assignments & exercises as a result.

Since becoming a member of the organization, Clayton has excelled and become a leader with the agency. He works tirelessly at his job and is always happy to assist others.

An example of just that happened in the county with the pursuit and apprehension of juvenile murder suspects from Tennessee some years ago. While off duty, Clayton, who happened to have been monitoring his radio, observed the pursuit of the suspects, and responded to assist. He took the initiative, responded from home, and put himself in position to aid other officers in the eventual apprehension of those suspects. He is an excellent example of commitment and dedication.

Clayton credits his family as the firm foundation on which his work ethic, tireless dedication, life, and its successes have been built. He is an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoys fishing.

Sheriff Foster stated that “Michael has proven himself to be an invaluable employee and an asset to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.” To add to his accomplishments, Clayton is also a previous 2013 Deacon Livingston Award Recipient. A Shift Sergeant with the agency for some time, Clayton, was recently promoted to Lieutenant earlier this year as he continues to make strides in doing an outstanding job.

For this, Lieutenant Michael Claytor is being recognized for his commitment to the citizens of Newberry County and we thank him for his service.
