Early this morning around 3am, employees at the Louis Rich Plant in Newberry County were evacuated due to an ammonia leak.
Nearly 200 employees were safely evacuated and Louis Rich maintenance and Haz Mat employees identified and contained the leak. A few hours later they gave the all clear for employees to return inside the plant.
“The leak was contained within the plant and was isolated in short order” according to Newberry Sheriff Lee Foster. “There was no danger to the general public, but precautions were taken in the interest of safely”.
Sheriff Lee Foster complimented the plant management and employees on an extremely orderly and calm evacuation as well as the quick response from the plant maintenance teams, and City/County First responders for their efforts to assist in the evacuation.
As of 6 a.m. this morning all roads around the facility were reopened and normal plant operations will resume.
