Laurens Sheriff upset after learning hospital could not perform sexual assault examination for victim

Laurens County Sheriff’s office responded to a burglary and sexual assault incident that occurred on July 13, 2017.  On arrival they found a victim inside the residence that had been cut, held against her will and brutally sexually assaulted.

John David Hall, 39 of 147 John Deere Lane, Easley SC was arrested for Burglary, criminal sexual conduct first degree, kidnapping and breach of peace aggravated in nature.

The victim was transported to Laurens County Hospital for treatment.  After arriving at the hospital, deputies were informed that the hospital did not have a Sexual Assault Nurse Examine on duty to perform the medical evaluation needed in a sexual assault case.

As a result the Sheriff says in his press release that the hospital recommended the victim go to a hospital in Greer, SC.  The investigator on this case attempted to express their concerns over asking an extremely traumatized victim to go to another hospital.  The victim finally declined to go to Greer.

Laurens Sheriff Don Reynolds attempted to reach out to Kay Swisher and Justin Benfield of The Greenville Health System for an explanation and to seek a solution to this problem but has not yet been able to contact anyone.

He said in the release:

It is unacceptable for Laurens County Hospital to not perform this examination and collection of evidence.  Furthermore, it is unbelievable that a victim of such a horrendous crime would have to travel to another county for the collection of evidence. This jeopardizes the investigation and puts the victim and others at further risk of harm. Fortunately, in this situation, there was enough evidence to move forward and arrest the individual responsible for assaulting the victim.

The suspect is currently being held at the Johnson Detention Center where he was booked on the charges listed below.
