Greenwood was extremely lucky as we only received a hint of Irma’s wrath that was felt from the Florida Keys through several southern states. With occasional gust of winds up to 30 to 50 mph in areas, Greenwood largest issues was with the dozens of trees falling.
Emergency crews, Duke Energy, Greenwood CPW and numerous others responded continuously Monday clearing them from roadways and powerlines. Thousands were left without power at times yesterday. Many remain without power this morning as utility workers battled the high winds creating very dangerous working conditions.
Local schools decide to error on the side of safety and closed schools on Monday in anticipation of rough weather. They also decided to close on Tuesday due to the number of families without power and the number of blocked roads. Schools in Ninety Six were forced to close as they did not even have power.
Greenwood County police, fire and EMS were busy responding to calls throughout the day. So far the only fatality reported was nearby in Calhoun Falls where a man was fatally injured by a falling limb.
We continue to pray for all those who were in the direct path of Irma. If you have the means please support the efforts to send relief items or support organizations aimed to help those in need.
