McCORMICK – World AIDS Day will be observed on Dec.16th at Light of Life Community Church at 6300 Highway 28 South, in McCormick SC. It is set to begin at 4:00pm. The event, sponsored by Upper Savannah Care Services, is an internationally observed day of awareness and remembrance. The theme of this event is “The Epidemic of HIV/AIDS In The Aging Population; Unspoken But Not Forgotten”. “Public awareness is also an important component of what we do”, says Jason L. Williams, Executive Director. “We have consistently served around 300 clients in our services area each year, so this is an issue that is quite relevant to Greenwood and surrounding areas,” Williams adds.
There will be two featured speakers and a performance poet for this event this year. Gerald McNair and David Alexander (pictured above) are two tireless HIV/AIDS advocates for South Carolina. They both bring a wealth of knowledge and compelling personal stories about HIV/AIDS issues. Tammaka Staley of Columbia, SC is a gifted and talented artist and advocate for social justice.
Upper Savannah Care Services is the only AIDS service organization in the Lakelands area and has been serving since 1995. It serves Greenwood, Abbeville, Edgefield, Laurens, McCormick and Saluda counties. There will be educational information available concerning HIV/AIDS.
