Ninety Six NHS to Commemorate First Southern Land Battle of the American Revolution

Ninety Six, SC – Ninety Six National Historic Site will host “The Battle of 96: Defense of the Home Front”, a special event on Saturday, November 18th, 2017, to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Ninety Six in 1775 and explore civilian life at the start of the Revolutionary War.

The event will last from 10 am to 4 pm and will include a variety of living history programs as well as demonstrations about 18th century lifeways, medicine, music, and children’s games.

At noon that day, join us for a bring-your-own-picnic concert in front of the Logan Log House. Volunteer musicians will play 18th century music for this lunchtime concert.  A brand new interpretive program will also make its debut during this event, “Rosie the Revolutionary” Firing Demonstration. Come see how women stepped out of traditional roles while their husbands were off to war. “Rosie” will even demonstrate the loading and firing of a backcountry rifle.

For a complete schedule of programs, visit our website at

About the Battle: On November 19-21, 1775, the Revolutionary War made its way to the South Carolina backcountry. This first land battle of the war south of New England started when 1,900 loyalists attacked 600 patriots gathered at Ninety Six. After three days of fighting, things ended with a truce but not before the death of James Birmingham, the first South Carolina patriot to die in the war.
