Congratulations to their most recent graduate of the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy, Deputy Sheriff Kayla M. Koon, of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.
Kayla recently completed and graduated from a 12 Week Basic Law Enforcement Training Program term at the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy as a member of Class #679, and is now a commissioned Class I Certified S.C. Law Enforcement Officer. A lifetime resident of Newberry County, Kayla began working with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office as a Corrections Officer with the Newberry County Detention Center in 2017.
Kayla is a 2008 graduate of Mid-Carolina High School and went on to attend Piedmont Technical College. She attended and completed Piedmont Technical College’s EMT School in 2010. With a desire to do more, Kayla decided that she would further serve her community and country when she joined the U.S. Army in 2011. She is currently holds the rank of Sergeant- U.S. Army Reserv e where she’s served as part of a U.S. Deployment, Kabul, Afghanistan (2015-2016: Police Liaison Detachment).
Having been bitten by the “public service bug” early in life, Kayla decided that there was more for her to do and she wanted to further her law enforcement service as a civilian as well. Having been hired as a Corrections Officer by the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office in 2017, Kayla was soon thereafter selected as a candidate to become a Deputy, a venture she began after completion of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
Kayla is the daughter of C. Scott Koon and Mrs. Pam Worthy Brown, both of Newberry County. She is proud to say that she is a 3nd generation law enforcement officer, as well as a first responder. Kayla’s family of service includes her father, Lance Corporal C. Scott Koon- S.C. Highway Patrol, her mother, Mrs. Pam Worthy Brown, EMT- Newberry County EMS, and her grandfather, Britton Worthy (deceased), a former EMT and law enforcement officer in his own right. That having been stated, public service isn’t just a job, it’s a call and one that she’s known all of her life, and has chosen to answer.
Congratulations to Deputy Sheriff Kayla M. Koon, one of the newest additions to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office family.
