The Board of Governors of the Abbeville Opera House has announced that they will be taking a brief hiatus from presenting productions during the 2019-2020 Winter Theatre Season. The break will begin at the end of the upcoming Summer Theatre Season which will be under the direction of Executive Director Emeritus Michael Genevie. Kathy Genevie will continue as Business Manager for the summer season and will also be directing one of the shows, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The Summer Theatre begins on Friday, June 7 with M*A*S*H by Tim Kelly, dramatized from the book by Richard Hooker. The last performance of the hit comedy Gilligan’s Island: The Musical will take place on Saturday, August 17 and that is when the hiatus will officially begin.
Board President, Ruth Freeman, said that with Business Manager Kathy Genevie retiring at the end of the Summer Season and Director Michael Genevie already retired, “We need to take time to consider all of our options and all of the steps that will need to be taken to fill these positions.”
Ms Freeman did stress that the Board will continue looking at guest directors to fill Michael’s position until a permanent replacement can be found, but that the most important focus at this time for the Opera House is to fill the position of Business/Office Manager that is being left vacant with Kathy’s retirement.
During this hiatus, the Abbeville City Events Season will continue throughout the fall and spring in the Opera House. Many events have already been set for the fall including Comedy Night with Pam Stone: A Benefit for Big Oaks Rescue Farm on Saturday, August 24 at 8pm.
