Three Charged With Murder in Laurens County

Three people are in custody and charged with Murder and Desecration of Human Remains in connection with a body found off Taylor Drive in Clinton, SC around 4:00pm on May 26, 2016 near an abandoned mobile home.  The Laurens County Coroner has ruled the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head and is conducting DNA tests to confirm the identity of the victim.

Help Miss Amazing Preteen Adalissa Howard compete in Chicago

Adalissa Howard was crowned Miss Amazing Preteen 2016 on May 1, 2016 at the South Carolina Miss Amazing Pageant.  This pageant is for girls and women with disabilities, it helps them to celebrate their abilities. 

Howard now has the opportunity to participate in the National Miss Amazing Pageant in Chicago.  This gives Howard a chance to see so many new thing that she might not be able to otherwise.

Blue Knights supports Special Olympics

SC VII of the Blue Knights Law Enforcement motorcycle club recently presented Special Olympics Area 5 (Whitten Center) a check for $7200.00 for this years poker run held in April. The two photo's attached are the club members presenting Director of SOA 5, Shelby Benson with the check and the group photo with some of the athletes and the Blue Knights.

Memorial Bricks being sold to be placed at the historic Ninety Six cotton mill site

The Ninety Six Town Parks Committee is selling bricks to be placed in the 96 Mill Village around the historic cotton mill turnstile. The bricks provide a lasting memory and serve as a permanent celebration of friends, family, groups and events. The paver can be engraved with your name, in honor or memory of someone who worked in a cotton mill, a loved ones name, a mill department, ect.

John de la Howe students receive Fishing 101

Volunteers from the McCormick area led by August Luedecke have given the campers in the John de la Howe Wilderness Program the opportunity to learn the basics of fishing.

This is the second season of the program, which began as the result of an outreach effort of the McCormick United Methodist Church.  Last year, Luedecke, Dan Tutt and Jerry Nettles collected tackle, equipment and monetary donations to have the resources to begin classes. Students have been taught over several weeks how to cast, tie knots, bait hooks and take fish off the hook by numerous volunteers who donate their time, resources and patience.

Lakeside Market event coming to Lake Greenwood

A unique event is coming to Lake Greenwood.  For two weekends, June 4 and June 11, Connect Lake Greenwood is hosting Lakeside Market.  This event will have two food trucks and several other local food vendors.  This event is to help determine the likelihood of bringing in a restaurant to the location.

South Carolina's Highest Honor, the Order of the Palmetto, Awarded to Converse College President Betsy Fleming

SPARTANBURG, SC -- South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto, was awarded to Converse College President Betsy Fleming during the college’s commencement ceremony on Saturday. It was Fleming’s final commencement service as ninth president of the Spartanburg, S.C. women's college, as her eleven-year tenure ends next month.

Agricultural Hay Lease

Ninety Six National Historic Site is seeking a lessee to harvest hay in the park. The agricultural lease program is intended to maintain the historic setting.

Approximately 85 acres of agricultural lands will be leased through a Special Use Permit. The permit will be issued for a period of 3 years with the potential to extend an additional two years. The lease price will be on a per year basis.

Laurens High Student Reported Missing

A student of Laurens District 55 High School has been missing since Sunday, May 8 2016.  Edwin Diaz Chirinos, 17 was last seen in the Gray Court area around 6:30 p.m.  He was wearing a black t-shirt and gray shorts.  He was driving a silver convertible Mustang with black top with a temporary dealer tag.

Glow Run to benefit Ware Shoals Youth Center

Over 80% of students in Ware Shoals are served by SNAP or Medicaid. Roughly 25 percent of students will either drop out or not graduate on time. Ty Grogan along with his wife, Taylor, began praying about what they could do to serve the youth of our community. After much prayer, God laid on their hearts the vision to start the Ware Shoals Youth Center to assist students in three key focus areas: scholastic, social, and spiritual.

Joint Warrants Sweep Nets 19 Arrests

The Clinton Department of Public Safety and the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office conducted their 3rd joint warrants sweep over the last year for drug offenders throughout the City of Clinton and Laurens County.  The operation which began the morning hours of Friday, May 6, 2016 netted 19 people.

Upper Savannah Names Ann Skinner Workforce Development Director

The Upper Savannah Council of Governments (USCOG) has promoted long-time Workforce Development Specialist Ann Skinner to Workforce Development Director, replacing Sandra Johnson who is retiring effective June 2016.

Johnson has directed USCOG’s workforce development efforts in the seven-county region of Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, Newberry and Saluda for three decades.

HSOG Board Giving to "Unleash The Possibilities" Major Gifts Campaign

The Humane Society of Greenwood Board and Advisor have committed $700,000 to the "Unleash The Possibilities" major gifts campaign.  Funds are being raised to build and fund the Adoption Center, Spay/Neuter Clinic, and Community Education Room in the new animal care center being built in collaboration with Greenwood County.

Students Honored at Awards Ceremony

At Piedmont Technical College’s 42nd annual Student Awards and Recognition Program, president Dr. Ray Brooks applauded the achievements of more than 40 student leaders.  The ceremony attracted students, faculty, staff, friends and family members.

Andy Omundson, associate vice president of student affairs, welcomed students and guests. Students who were listed in this year’s edition of Who’s Who among Students in American Junior Colleges were recognized by David Rosenbaum, associate dean of students, who also congratulated Presidential Ambassadors for their leadership during the current academic year.

National Guard begins project in Abbeville County

The South Carolina Army National Guard has begun the process of clearing and grading land at the Lakelands Commerce Center in Abbeville. The South Carolina National Guard 122nd Engineer Battalion will clear and grade approximately 40 acres at the Lakelands Commerce Center.

Cub Scout Day Camp

Long Cane District Cub Scout Day Camp will be held at Connie Maxwell's Camp Oasis from 8-4pm on June 13-16 and 8-1pm June 17th. Our staff will be prepared to accept the boys beginning at7:30am. We will have a fun-filled week consisting of crafts, bb-guns, archery, fishing, horseback riding, fire safety, hiking, field games, and an inflatable waterslide.

Tourism to Ninety Six National Historic Site creates 5.6 million in Economic Benefits

A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 80,223 visitors to Ninety Six National Historic Site in 2015 spent 4.3 million in communities near the park. That spending supported 71 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the state economy of 5.6 million.
