Madden Eyes Drydene Xtreme DIRTcar Crown at Modoc

Three different winners in its first four races sets the stage for the Drydene Xtreme DIRTcar Series championship next week.

Chris Madden carried the momentum from his incredible 2019 run into the winter, winning the first two races to lead the championship standings into Modoc Raceway on Saturday, Feb. 29. With a 16-point lead, Madden will not only be chasing the $7,000-to-win checkered flag, but he’ll also be trying to hold off Ross Bailes, Zack Mitchell, Kyle Strickler and Trent Ivey to capture the $20,000 series championship check.

Two arrested after home found in total disarray

On 2/18/2020 at approximately 2:30pm, Laurens County Sheriff deputies responded to Flymm Smith Road in Waterloo in reference to a welfare check. Upon arrival, the residence was discovered to be in total disarray, both inside and outside. There were children living at the residence in cluttered, unsanitary, and unsafe conditions. Due to the deplorable state of the home, Ashley Redrick, 32 and Richard Shiver, 45 (occupants of the home) were both arrested without incident and charged with three counts each of Unlawful Conduct Towards A Child.

Unidentified homicide victim may have ties to Laurens

Twinsburg Police out of Ohio wants to know if one of their cold cases may have ties to someone in Laurens County.  The unidentified homicide victim’s body was found on Feb 18, 1982 behind a former business inside of a garbage bag.  His exact cause of death is unknown, but there is evidence of possible blunt force trauma, stabbing and post mortem fire.

Three facing neglect charges toward animals and children

On February 13 at approximately 4PM, Laurens County Animal Control requested assistance from the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office in reference to a horse being found in poor condition at 401 Pickens Street in Joanna. Upon arrival, the horse was discovered to be malnourished and had issues with its hooves and legs. One goat was also found to be in poor health.

West Carolina Tel offers up to $8,000 in scholarships, deadline March 6

West Carolina Tel, your local technology solutions cooperative, is a strong advocate for higher education and the economic, cultural and social well-being of the communities it serves. To further that mission, West Carolina Tel is offering an annual $2,000 scholarship, renewable for up to three additional, consecutive years.

One local high school senior could receive as much as $8,000 toward college tuition, provided the student continues to meet the qualifications of the Scholarship Program each year. In addition, West Carolina Tel is also an annual partner in the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) scholarship program for rural high school seniors across America. The FRS scholarships that are available include: $5,000 FRS Staurulakis Family Scholarship, $2,500 Everett Kneece Return to Rural America Scholarship, $1,500 TMS Scholarship and up to $15,000 Colt Ford Scholarship.

Laurens Sheriff searching for murder suspect

Hakeem Qudell Evans of Laurens is wanted for the January murder of Rasham Walker. Evans is 30 years old, approximately 5'3, and has "We Live to Die" tattooed on his upper chest, as well as "Linda" tattooed on his right arm.

Two killed, 1 hurt in single vehicle accident

Two people were killed and one other person was transported with life-threatening injuries in a single vehicle accident in Saluda County.

According to SCHP, three people were traveling south on Long Road in a 2007 Chevy pickup when it left the road and struck a tree.  The accident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. Monday night. SCHP trooper reported that no person was wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Serial abuser sentenced to max for latest domestic incident

A Newberry man will spend a decade behind bars after being convicted Thursday afternoon for the sixth time on a charge of domestic violence, 8th Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced.

John Henry Davenport Jr., 39, of Newberry, was found guilty by a Newberry County jury of first-degree domestic violence. The jury deliberated less than an hour before returning the guilty verdict. Circuit Judge Craig Brown sentenced Davenport to 10 years in prison, the maximum sentence allowed under state law for first-degree domestic violence.

Two arrested after finding 32 dogs chained up, poor health

Laurens County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two people in connection with a residence having 32 dogs chained up and appearing to be malnourished and in poor health.

Jerry Westmoreland and Chicuan Amaker of 298 Bryson Road, Fountain Inn have been arrested and charged with Ill Treatment of Animals.

Deputies responded to the residence on January 21 around 8:30 a.m. after being contacted by the Laurens County Animal Control.

Authorities remove 145 dogs & more animals from Ware Shoals home

Laurens County Animal Control and assistance from the Sheriff’s Office are working to remove 145 dogs, 2 cats, 107 chickens, 10 ducks and 8 rabbits from what they describe a “Puppy Mill” operation.

Sheriff’s office has charged two, Barry Davis and Barbara Timms with multiple counts of Animal Cruelty.

The investigation started after someone purchased a dog from the couple and noticed that it was in poor health.  They reported it to authorities.

Laurens Sheriff investigating fatal shooting

Laurens County Sheriff deputies responded to a shooting call around 3 a.m. this morning.  The call came from a residence on Walker Ave, Laurens.  When officers arrived, they found one deceased victim of a gunshot wounds.

Sheriff says there is no immediate danger to the public and that they are investigating the incident.  They should have more information later today.

Anderson man killed in single vehicle accident in Abbeville

SCHP said a fatal accident occurred early Wednesday morning around 4 a.m. in Abbeville County on Hwy 201.

Abbeville Coroner’s Office said Cameron Lollis, 31 of Anderson died of blunt force trauma after his 2006 Ford van ran off the road, hit a bridge and overturned.  They said Lollis was wearing a seat belt.

South Carolina Highway Patrol has reported that a head-on collision occurred around 1:30 am this morning that killed one driver.  The collision occurred on Hwy 72 in Abbeville County.

NS Police arrest car thieves

Earlier this morning a Ninety Six Police Officers noticed a suspicious vehicle on Kate Fowler Road.  As they attempted to perform a traffic stop, the vehicle attempted to flee.

The officer pursued the vehicle for a short time until it finally ran off the road into a ditch.  Four suspects jumped out to the vehicle attempting to run.  The officer was able to catch one of them.  Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office joined the search and set up a perimeter around Roxanna Drive and down Golf Course Road.  Using GCSO bloodhounds they were able to flush out two more suspects and take them into custody.  One remains at-large.

Abbeville County Animal Shelter Pets of the Month: Graham & Nicole

It is hard not to notice all of the toys behind Graham in this picture. This is because he LIVES for his toys! He absolutely loves to play ball and to play outside. Graham is always happy. I mean look at that smile on his face! He loves to meet new people and other dogs. Graham is a 2 year old mix breed. He has been at the shelter for 215 days! He would love not to have to spend another day here at the shelter and spend it in a home of his own. Come meet sweet, playful Graham today!

WCTEL Sponsors Due West Robotics Club
Shannon Sears, Director of Commercial Operations at WCTEL met the Due West Robotics Club at the Daniel-Moultrie Science Center on Erskine’s Campus. The Robotics Club presented their projects from the previous seasons and their plans for the upcoming season. These projects help to develop the students’ problem solving, engineering, and technical skillsets.
