Two killed in vehicle crash in Abbeville

Two died in a single vehicle accident that occurred Friday, May 25 around 7 p.m. on Hwy 178 near Rock Springs Church Road in Abbeville, SC.

Fatal vehicle accident claims life of Ninety Six man

A fatal accident occurred this morning on Siloam Church Road around 5:44 a.m. this morning. Daryl Luke McCarthy, 29 of 201 Pinelake Drive, Ninety Six SC died at the scene according to Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox. 

Report says McCarthy was traveling on Siloam Church Road when his vehicle left the roadway and struck multiple objects before coming to a stop.  McCarthy was the only person in the vehicle.

Newberry Sheriff seeks public's help investigating 3 church burglaries in the Pomaria community

The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office is seeking assistance to solve three burglaries to churches located in the Pomaria section of Newberry County.

Sometime between 8pm Tuesday night and 8am Wednesday morning, someone entered and burglarized three churches. The suspect(s) entered the churches by forcing their way into the church. Once inside the church, the suspects took electronic equipment, food, and a small amount of money. Law enforcement is still working with the victims to place a dollar amount on the items taken
“This is a heinous crime,” said Sheriff Foster. “I was raised and still believe that churches are both sacred and Holy and to break into and steal from them is to steal directly from God. We will make every effort to apprehend and prosecute the person(s) responsible for this crime and I stand convinced that the God who never slumbers or sleeps has seen and is at work as well.”

Gov. Henry McMaster Designates the Month of May as Military Spouse Appreciation Month

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Governor Henry McMaster was joined today by S.C. Adjutant General Robert Livingston and South Carolina military families to designate the month of May as Military Spouse Appreciation Month.

“South Carolina has a rich military tradition that we are proud of, but those brave men and women who choose to serve don’t serve alone - they leave behind families and spouses that truly serve as the backbone of our military forces,” said Gov. Henry McMaster. “We thank these spouses and their families for their support they provide our men and women in uniform because, without them, our country and our state would not be as strong as it is today.”

Suspect in vehicle theft arrested, vehicle located
The man who stole a truck from a convenience store in Newberry County yesterday morning is in custody and the truck has been located. 

Johnathan Wade McAbee, 32, of 526 Woodruff Street, Woodruff SC was taken into custody in North, South Carolina by the North Police Department overnight. He was still driving the stolen truck from Newberry County when he was arrested. The truck was recovered and he was taken into custody without incident.

Suspect sought in vehicle theft string in Newberry
The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office is asking for your assistance in locating a suspect involved in a string of crimes starting in the upstate, who stole a truck from a convenience store located on Highway 121 at the intersection of I-26 in Newberry County.

The suspect went into the convenience store at about 3am and remained for some time. At around 5am, the suspect went out to a vehicle, whose owner had left the keys in the vehicle, and stole it. This vehicle is a 1988 Ford F-150 extended cab pickup truck with South Carolina license plate DHT139. The suspect left in an unknown direction of travel.

Laurens Sings 2018 kicks off their 2nd season

Laurens, SC - The City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Dept. announced last week the second season of Laurens Sings to be held during the summer of 2018.

Laurens Sings is a singing competition, open to ages 8 and up.

Laurens Sings will include the top 15 finalists after auditions are completed. Open auditions will be held on Thursday, May 10 at 6pm and Saturday, May 12 at 10am. All auditions will be held at The Ridge at Laurens.

Murrells Inlet man sentenced to 50 years in prison for VFW murder

Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Thursday that a 15-year journey for justice in the brutal killing of 76-year-old James Bolt at the Laurens County Veterans of Foreign Wars building came to and when the killer was convicted and sentenced to life in prison following a trial at the Laurens County Judicial Complex.

Deputy Sheriff Koon graduates SC Criminal Justice Academy
Congratulations to their most recent graduate of the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy, Deputy Sheriff Kayla M. Koon, of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.

Kayla recently completed and graduated from a 12 Week Basic Law Enforcement Training Program term at the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy as a member of Class #679, and is now a commissioned Class I Certified S.C. Law Enforcement Officer.
A lifetime resident of Newberry County, Kayla began working with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office as a Corrections Officer with the Newberry County Detention Center in 2017.

Gov McMaster suspends Greenville County Sheriff Lewis, appoints former Sheriff

Immediately following the indictment of Greenville County Sheriff Will Lewis, Governor Henry McMaster today issued Executive Order 2018-15, suspending Lewis from office and appointing former Greenville County Sheriff Johnny Mack Brown to serve as interim sheriff until Lewis is acquitted, convicted, the indictment is otherwise disposed of, or until a sheriff is elected and qualifies in the next general election for county sheriffs.

Brown, who served as Greenville County Sheriff for six terms beginning in 1972, most recently served as South Carolina’s U.S. marshal when he was appointed by President George W. Bush in 2002.

Long-time crack dealer sentenced to 25 years in prison

Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Monday that a Cherokee County crack dealer was sentenced Thursday to 25 years in prison following a trial at the Newberry County Courthouse.

Reginald Rodezere Scurry, 42, of Gaffney, was found guilty Thursday of trafficking crack cocaine, 28-100 grams, third offense, and failure to stop for blue light following the trial. A Newberry County jury deliberated for less than two hours before returning the guilty verdicts.

Several locations evacuated after receiving bomb threats

Several locations in Laurens and Newberry investigated bomb threats including Laurens County Hospital, Palmetto Bone and Joint, Laurens County Courthouse and the Self Medical Center in Newberry.

Each location was evacuated and local law agencies along with SLED investigated each location and finally gave the all clear after not finding any devices.
