NAACP to monitor Myrtle Beach for discriminatory practices during Black Bike Week

The NAACP will conduct Operation Bike Week Justice to monitor discriminatory practices in Myrtle Beach during Black Bike Week—the annual Memorial Day weekend gathering of African-American motorcycle enthusiasts. Throughout the weekend, the NAACP South Carolina State Conference, local branch leadership, and NAACP member volunteers will be observing police activity and treatment of black tourists, and the practices of local businesses, watching traffic patterns and fielding calls.

Dollar General now open in Abbeville

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. – May 22, 2017 – Dollar General’s newest store at 5827 Highway 28 N in Abbeville is now open!  In its new location, Dollar General will offer area residents a convenient new place to shop for everyday essentials at low prices.

Dollar General will celebrate the store’s official grand opening on Saturday, May 27 at 8 a.m. with free prizes and special deals.  Additionally, the first 50 adult shoppers at the store will receive a $10 Dollar General gift card and the first 200 shoppers will receive a Dollar General tote bag with complimentary product samples, among other giveaways.

Rhodes receives Epsilon Gamma Gamma scholarship

Ninety Six High School senior Lauren Rhodes received a $1,000 scholarship from the Epsilon Gamma Gamma Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Newberry man sentenced to 22 years in prison for assault, burglary of elderly woman

Newberry, S.C. – Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Friday that a Newberry man was sentenced Thursday to 22 years in prison for the 2016 assault and burglary of an elderly neighbor.

Anthony Maurice Wise was found guilty of first degree assault and battery, kidnapping and first degree burglary by a Newberry County jury following three days of trial and just over an hour of deliberation.

Ninety Six woman fatally injured in wreck on Greenwood Hwy

On Thursday morning May 18, 2017 at approximately 8:25am a single car accident occurred at 1984 Greenwood Highway in Saluda County. A 2014 Nissan Altima driven by Jacqualine Amanda McCarthy of Ninety Six, SC. Her vehicle was west bound towards Saluda when she left the road for and unknown reason and struck a tree.

SCDPS "Buckle Up" campaign promoted at major ballparks statewide

COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety kicked off its Buckle Up, South Carolina, safety belt campaign with an emphasis on safe summer travel in advance of Memorial Day weekend.

The department held a news conference at three baseball parks across the state today including Spirit Communications Park in Columbia, Fluor Field at the West End in Greenville, and Joe P. Riley Jr. Park in Charleston.

CLEMSON, South Carolina — As the rate of Lyme disease grows rapidly across the United States, new research offers veterinarians a forecasting map that tells them which parts of the country are most at risk of Lyme disease infections in dogs, which could also help track and predict Lyme disease in people.

Deputy credited with saving woman's life after finding her unresponsive
A Newberry County Deputy Sheriff is being credited with saving a woman’s life after finding her unresponsive in her living room.

Lieutenant Odell Schumpert was working with the Newberry County Housing Authority on May 4, when he entered an apartment with an employee of the Housing Authority. Once inside, they discovered the resident lying unresponsive in the living room.

Congressman Duncan to stop in Ninety Six during 5th Annual "Thanking Our First Responders Tour"

For the past 5 years, Congressman Duncan has organized a district tour focused on first responders and to thank them for their service while listening to their concerns. Every year the Congressman’s tour touches a different area of his 11 county district.  Congressman Duncan will make a stop in Ninety Six today from 3:30 – 4pm at the Ninety Six Police Station.  This is one of several stops he will be making today.

On May 6 at about 8pm, several people were gathered at a residence on Adelaide Street just outside the City of Newberry for a party. Several men were outside grilling, when verbal altercation took place between two of the men.

Students from the University of South Carolina, Department of Anthropology, will be participating in an archeological field school at Ninety Six National Historic Site May 8-26. The work will be focused primarily at Robert Gouedy’s 1759 Trading Post, also known as Fort Ninety Six.

Two people died in a head-on collision near Park Seed Company this morning

According to Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox, the fatal accident occurred this morning around 8am on Hwy 254 in Hodges SC.  The driver in each vehicle was killed.

Trail Camera leads to arrest of stolen trailer
On April 28, 2017, someone stole a utility trailer from a homeowner on Highway 121 in the Silverstreet section of Newberry County. What they did not know is that the trailer had been stolen once before, but recovered by law enforcement; so the homeowner now had a trail camera on the trailer. The camera did its job and captured the photographs of the subjects who took the trailer, as well as the vehicle they were driving.

Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina awarded $1,500 to Food Bank of Greenwood County in its 2017 Spring funding.

This grant bears the name of one of the guiding principles of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, in omnibus caritas, meaning “in all things charity.”

Caritas grants are awarded to organizations meeting basic needs of underserved individuals and families living in poverty in South Carolina.  These organizations often act as a lifeline in their communities and provide valuable services to those most in need.  In total, 47 organizations were awarded Caritas spring 2017 funding for a total of $112,200 so that they may continue providing services to individuals and families in South Carolina.

Laurens woman sentenced to 14 years in murder cover up

Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Friday that a Laurens woman was sentenced Thursday afternoon to 14 years in prison for her part in covering up the 2003 murder of James Bolt at the Veterans of Foreign Wars building in Laurens.
