One captured, three sought in home invasion

The Saluda County Sheriff’s Office has one suspect in custody and is searching for three more in connection with a Wednesday afternoon home invasion that left one man injured.

Main Street Laurens Announces Second Jump Start Competition

The Main Street Laurens Economic Enhancement Team announces a second Jump Start business Competition. Applications for this year’s Jump Start are available now and the deadline for the application portion is June 15.

With the success of the first Jump Start in 2014 and the renewed interest in doing business in downtown that quickly followed, Main Street Laurens is looking forward to another successful competition. “Last year’s competition was a great way to “jump start” new businesses in the downtown. After the announcement of Yo’ Cup Cafe and Coffeehouse as the winner, we started receiving more interest from new business owners in available properties in downtown”, explained Jonathan Irick, Main Street Laurens Director. “After Yo’Cup opened, we had three other new businesses locate to the square area.” said Irick.

Two Piedmont Technical College students were recently among those named to the Phi Theta Kappa South Carolina All-State Academic Team. Malaurie Hullings of Plum Branch and Kenneth Washington of Hodges were among the 29 students honored at a ceremony in Columbia.

McClain competing in High School State Final Rodeo

Tristin McClain will be competing in the High School State Finals rodeo hoping to earn a finish to send him to the Nationals in Wyoming. 

McClain 17 of Honea Path is the son of Joe & Marie McClain and is currently ranked #2 in the South Carolina High School Rodeo Association in Bull Riding. McClain has been riding bulls since August 2013.

Holden Smith receives David Sherer Memorial Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College student and Ninety Six resident Holden Smith (right) was recently awarded the David Sherer Memorial Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Smith, an automotive technology major, is pictured with Chad Teague, scholarship committee member. This annual scholarship is available to an Automotive Technology student with a GPA of 2.5 or higher who has financial need.

Musgrove Mill State Historic Site offers a Back Country Survival Program
On Saturday, May 23, 2015 at Musgrove Mill State Historic Site will offer a hands-on program for visitors to learn about and experience how the colonies would have been surveyed. Local historian and author Walter Allen will demonstrate the use of historic surveying equipment, after which time visitors will have the opportunity to try their hand at some real survey work on the park.

SC Festival of Stars Main Street 4th of July Parade
The SC Festival of Stars Main Street Fourth of July Parade in Ninety Six is set for July 4 starting at 10 a.m.  The parade is open to the public and free. Registration is required for placement.

Forms are available online at www.townofninetysixsc.com under the Tourism dropdown box. For those not participating, all are invited to come watch. The theme for those interested is Patriotic colors.

CenturyLink, Inc. recently announced the winners of the CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation’s Teachers and Technology grant program. The program, which has been offered since 2008, awards grants to schools in CenturyLink’s local service areas on behalf of teachers who have developed specific plans to innovatively implement technology in their classrooms.

Mammograms and Related Tests Will Be Available For Uninsured and Underinsured Women

Women in the Lakelands who are uninsured or can’t afford a needed mammogram just received a priceless gift—Self Regional Healthcare has been selected as a 2015 Susan G. Komen Mountains to Midlands grant recipient.

The Self Regional Healthcare Cancer Center will receive $52,453 to be used over the next 12 months for medical imaging such as mammograms and diagnostic tests and breast health education and screening outreach.

Symetra Tour Players give advice & hands-on training to students

Wednesday was a beautiful day at Deer Creek Golf facility as they hosted the second annual Youth Golf Clinic during the Self Regional Healthcare Women’s Health Classic.  Over 200 8th grade students representing four school districts attended this unique golf clinic.  Players on the Symetra Tour and in this week’s Women’s Health Classic were on hand giving students hands-on training and valuable advice throughout the day.

Fifty eight compete in JDLH Golf Tournament at Hickory Knob

MCCORMICK, SC - Fifty-eight golfers competed in the John de la Howe School Alumni Association Golf Tournament May 2 at Hickory Knob Golf Course. Capturing first place with a score of 13 under par was a foursome comprised of golfers from Calhoun Falls, Starr and Elberton, GA.
