8th Circuit Solicitor David Stumbo along with Laurens County Sheriff Don Reynolds filed official notice of their intent to seek the death penalty against William Ryan Looper for the murder of 2-year-old Brantley Justin Smith.
On Saturday, June 30 Laurens County Sheriff responded to a home on Country Lane in Clinton after receiving a 911 call for an unresponsive child. When they arrived they found what one deputy explained “the worst think I’ve ever seen”. They found the body of Brantley Smith, 2 severely beaten with injuries all over his body and according to police reports, sexually molested before his death.
The child’s mother Jessica Blake Smith, 27 and her boyfriend William Ryan Looper, 27 were both arrested. Smith is charged with homicide by child abuse and two counts of unlawful conduct toward a child. Looper is charged with murder, criminal sexual conduct with a minor 1st degree and two counts of unlawful conduct toward a child.
A judge denied bond for both.
