Thanks for reading GwdToday - Everyday!

GREENWOOD, SC – A man was sentenced to 10 years after he pled guilty to a charge of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature in connection with a January incident in which he had sex with a 13-year-old-boy.

Gregory Jerome Thomas, 51, received the 10 year sentence as part of a negotiated plea deal. Public defender Janna Nelson told the court that she felt the sentence was too stiff, but felt that it was the best deal that her client could get. She noted that recently elected Solicitor David Stumbo, who will be in office for the next term of court, had made very public his stance on these types of crimes during his campaign.

The incident occurred on January 8, 2012, and was reported on February 9, 2012. Thomas admitted to having sex with the victim underneath a stairwell at the Church of the Resurrection, located at 700 South Main Street next to the Greenwood County Library.

Thomas gave a full statement to law enforcement about the incident. He was initially charged with 2nd degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, but the charge was reduced to assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature as part of the plea deal. Thomas will also have to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.

The crime falls under the 85% rule, meaning that Thomas must serve at least 85% of his sentence, or about 8 ½ years, before being considered for release.

RIGHT ON Charrelle Boykin, you hit the nail on the head. Lean back....ok, you lean back when you're a victim or family member who has delt with rape. No excuses or further hearsay can change my opinion that he pleaded guilty to molestation/rape.

I apologize for my comment to you Ms.Charrelle Boykin. I meant no harm to you, we all have our view on situations and this is yours. You're entitled to it. We all will be judged one day. I do not uphold him because he was wrong, just knowing what I know, caused me to feel different. May God bless you.

Charrell Boykin, I never tried to defend him. Yes, he was wrong, Did you not see that on my post?? He was totally wrong, but who are you to judge him? Let God take care of him and once he start his sentence, I'm sure he can handle himself in prison!!There's more to it as I stated before, and you or noone else will change my view of him. You're quick to say what he need but, again, who are you to judge? Now, this is my Freedom of Speech to you!!

Sincerely,

Stella Carter

Ms. Stella Carter there is a word called "reality" that may assist you in understanding some of the hurt this community feels as a result of YOUR brother-in-law's actions. If you are concerned with what people say in their comments about him on Greenwood Today, then YOU are definitely not ready to know what those male inmates are gonna call him when he reaches SCDC!!!!

Have A Great Day!

Thankfully the First Amendment of the United States Constitution allows me and everyone else.."Freedom of Speech." With all due respect Ms. Carter you may not agree with alot of the comments and several of us may feel the same about your opinion. However, in the USA we have the right to agree or disagree with other people's opinions but you can't demand anyone to not state their view(s).

I don't have to know all of the facts to know that a 51-year old man had sex with a thirteen year old child. Are you serious? There is nothing to question. Whatever facts were left out it may have worked in this pedophile's favor. This individual is sick, needs immediate mental health treatment of some kind of psychological assistance.Regardless of what was left out of the equation...it still adds up that HE had SEX with a minor. That is statutory rape all day long--365 days a year.Ms. Carter the best way you could help your loved one is to encourage him to take responsibility for being the perpetrator instead of the victim.

I don't understand the psychological position of people who molest/rape or involve themselves sexually with minors. However,I do know that this behavior didn't just start. There could be other victims as it relates to your brother-in-law. He didnt just wake up one day & decided to have sex with this 13-year old boy. I can assure there are others out there, but for whatever reasons may not have the courage or the support of their family members to step forth.

Ms.Carter, the next time you become angry at a comment left by someone about your brother-in-law, think about how angry, disappointed helpless, and hopeless his victim and victim's family feel.

Bottom line is your brother-in-law is a RAPIST!! The quicker you accept this news and encourage your brother-in-law to be accountable FOR HIS ACTIONS,the quicker this community can move forward & THE QUICKER THE VICTIM & HIS FAMILY CAN BEGIN THEIR HEALING PROCESS.

Respectfully,
Charrelle
