GREENVILLE, SC – Former Abbeville County Sheriff Charles Goodwin pleaded guilty Friday to one count of misconduct in office.

Goodwin admitted in court to receiving kickbacks from county funds paid to an auto body repair shop between 1998 and 2011. He also admitted to using inmates to work on personal vehicles and family property.

Court records indicate that Goodwin was sentenced to 10 years in prison, suspended to five years of probation. Goodwin will also have to pay $4,445 in restitution in addition to performing 100 hours of community service.

The South Carolina Attorney General’s office announced that Goodwin had been indicted by a grand jury on Tuesday. Goodwin resigned Monday evening after being notified of the impending indictment.

Governor Nikki Haley will appoint an interim sheriff to serve until a special election can be held. Abbeville County Coroner Ronnie Ashley has assumed duties as sheriff until the governor appoints an interim sheriff.

I bet he goes to Calhoun Falls and becomes a member of city council. We have already seen they will elect anyone.

This man is laughing all the way out of the court house and it's justice system he was supposed to be serving..and he'll laugh his way right back into another office..or he'll sit back and draw his retirement that he stole for..sad..really sad..he walks and laughs while other's would have had to serve time as well as restitution..The many he has sent to jail would love to see him come join them I'm sure..
