John Robert “Bob” McCord, 92, resident of 322 McCord Road, widower of Mary Neal Weimer McCord, died January 8, 2017, at his home.
Born April 1, 1924, in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Frank Thomas and Shadie Kate Lanford McCord. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and Tri-State College in Indiana. He also did graduate studies at the University of South Carolina at Columbia. Mr. McCord was a US Army Veteran of World War II, serving in Headquarters Service Company, 15th Engineering Battalion.
He was a self- employed contractor having done a multitude of different engineering jobs throughout the years.
A Charter and Life Long Member of Rock Presbyterian Church, he was also a Deacon and former choir member and played key roles in the Men’s Organization of the church, including the Men’s Supper. He also helped build the existing church and manse.
Surviving are two daughters, Jessica and husband Warren Mundy and Shadonne and husband Ray Sparrow, all of Greenwood; four grandchildren, Seth (Katie) Mundy, Nealy (Michael) Shiles, Erica (Joseph) Sisiam and Chancy (Brian) Paules; and four great-grandchildren, Claire Shiles, Luke Shiles, Astrid Sisiam and Bridget Sisiam.
He was the last member of his immediate family and was predeceased by his wife of 65 years; a daughter, Bobbye Neal McCord Monk; two brothers, Frank McCord and Reuben McCord; two sisters, Lois M. Graves and Shadie M. Perry; and a longtime friend, Sammy Conway.
Funeral services were conducted at Rock Presbyterian Church on Tuesday followed by burial in the church cemetery with Dr. Christopher Leonard and Rev. Debby Plumstead Marshall officiating.
