Katherine “Diggie” Stoehr Funke, 91, entered peacefully into the presence of her heavenly Father on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 in the home of her son, Dr. Anderson B. Funke.
Born February 22, 1926 in Cincinnati, OH to the late James H. and Martha B. Stoehr, Diggie grew up in Terrace Park, Ohio, then attended Stephens College in Columbia, MO. Shortly after finishing her studies at Stephens, she met and married William (Bill) George Funke, her beloved husband of 69 years before Bill predeceased her in September of last year. Her son Andy and his recently-deceased wife Debbie (Meekins) Funke lovingly cared for Bill and Diggie since they moved nearby in June 2015.
Diggie and Bill raised five sons, all graduates of either West Point or the U.S. Naval Academy, all surviving her: Carl A. Funke and wife Donna of El Cajon, CA, J. Christian Funke and wife Lauren of Bremerton, WA, William H. Funke and wife Cathy of Carlsbad, CA, Anderson B. Funke of Abbeville, SC, and Alexander T. Funke and wife Joan of Elbert, CO; 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted Monday, March 13, 2017 at 10:00AM at Chattanooga National Cemetery, 1200 Bailey Ave. Chattanooga, TN, with Rev. J. Archie Moore officiating. The family is planning a memorial gathering in the San Diego, CA area, where Bill and Diggie lived most of their married lives, this spring.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Greenwood Presbyterian Church, 1414 Calhoun Rd. Greenwood, SC 29649, gpc-pca.org.
