Jim Bernini - Greenwood

Vincent A. “Jim” Bernini, 98, resident of Greenwood, husband of Linda S. Lynch Bernini, passed away peacefully Monday, March 13, 2017 at his residence.

Born November 27, 1918 in Craco, Italy to the late Massimiliano and Isabella Pascarella Bernini, Jim came through Ellis Island at the age of 3 and settled in New York City with his family. Jim graduated from high school and took various college courses. In 1941 Jim was drafted into the Army, serving during WWII in the 309th Combat Engineer Battalion and obtained the rank of 1st Sergeant. He was awarded a Bronze Star with 4 Bronze Clusters for service in France, Belgium, North Africa and Germany, among many other awards. During his time in the Army, Jim became a naturalized Citizen of the United States.

Jim made Greenwood his home in 1945. He worked as a Millwright for Daniel Construction Co for 45 plus years and enjoyed his cattle farm. Affectionately known to many in Greenwood as Uncle Jim, he was a true friend and mentor. Jim was recently inducted into the Greenwood County Hall of Heroes.

He was member of First Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, and sang in the choir.

Jim is survived by his loving wife and faithful caregiver of 41 years of the home; his daughter Phyllis Talbert Stewart and husband James of Greenwood; his grandchildren, John Talbert and wife Summer of Franklin, TN, Jim Neel Talbert of Irmo, SC: a brother, Nicholas Anthony Bernini “Nicky” of Staten Island, NY; several nieces and nephews including Bud Johnson and wife Vivian of Raleigh, NC, Eric Baker of Cross Hill, SC, and Kara Lynch of Abbeville, SC.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, March 17, 2017 at 11 AM from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rick Hendricks officiating, burial with military honors will follow at Oakbrook Memorial Park.

The family is at the home and will receive friends from 10:00 AM until the hour of service on Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of South Carolina, 326 Montague Ave. Greenwood, SC 29649.
