Lee A. Kwist, 81, resident of 132 Sanders Court, husband of Jean Garrett Kwist, died Sunday, April 16, 2017 at Hospice Care of the Piedmont.
Born in the Netherlands, January 10, 1936, he was a son of the late Jan and Martha Hubregtse Kwist. Lee’s family came to America, landing in New York Harbor January 26, 1954, and then the family came to Greenwood where Lee’s father had been employed to play the Carillon Bells at Callie Self Memorial Baptist Church in Greenwood.
Lee finished high school in the Netherlands in 1955 and enlisted in the US Navy for a four year tour of duty. For five weeks his father trained him to be a piano and organ technician and in 1971 he began his own business, Kwist Piano Services, retiring in 2016.
He was a member of Harris Baptist Church.
He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Jane Hord.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are three sons, Robert (Debi) Kwist of Abbeville, Daniel Kwist of Greenwood and Steve (Margaret) Owings of Greenwood; three daughters, Barbara O. (Alton) Lanier of Simpsonville, Phyllis O. Emerine of Charleston and Gloria O. (George) Ivey of Sugarland, Tx.; two brothers, Adriaan (Mildred) Kwist and John (Peggy) Kwist, both of Summerville; a sister, Joan Hunt of Greer; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 PM Wednesday at Harris Baptist Church with Rev. Frank Thomas and Rev. David Clegg officiating.
Entombment will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be the grandchildren.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 1 PM Wednesday. The family at the home on Sanders Court and will receive friends at the church from 1 to 2:45 Wednesday afternoon.
