George Johnson Jr. - Greenwood

George Luther Johnson, Jr., 78, resident of 112 Kennedy Court, husband of Linda Abbott Johnson, died Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Self Regional Medical Center.

Born in Greenwood, April 12, 1939, he was a son of the late George Luther Johnson, Sr. and Alma Parkman Johnson.  Mr. Johnson was a graduate of Greenwood High School and Clemson University.  While at Clemson, he was a member of the CDA (Clemson Dance Association) and was a member of the Blue Key Honor Society.  After completing his degree in Civil Engineering, he joined the US Army and was stationed at Fort Sill Army Base in Lawton, Ok for 3 years.  After being Honorable discharged from the Army, he began his working career with Chemstrand/Monsanto of Greenwood where he remained a loyal and conscientious employee retiring after over 48 years with the company. 

Most importantly, he was a faithful follower of God, devoted father, grandfather and loving husband.  A member and former Deacon of the First Baptist Church, Mr. Johnson was also a member of the Timms Sunday School Class.  During his retirement he enjoyed spending time working on his farm and sharing his love of hunting, fishing and cheering on his beloved Clemson Tigers  with his grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a daughter, Ashley Darby and husband Drew of Greenwood and a son, Jay Johnson and wife Leslie of Greenwood; two sisters, Joyce Nickles and husband Phil of Greenwood and Jean Glaze and husband Dr. Jack Glaze of Clinton, MS; a brother, Frank Johnson and wife Ann Wynne of Charleston and was predeceased by a sister Helen Ketterman Smith.  Also surviving are his six grandchildren, Andrew and Hayden Darby and George “Buddy”, Landyn, Abby Grace and Hamp Johnson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday from the First Baptist Church with Dr. Tony Hopkins officiating.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 prior to the service at the church.  Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery following the service.

Pallbearers will be his Grandchildren and Honorary Escort will be members of the Timms Sunday School Class.
