Gene Jones - McCormick

Eugene S. “Gene” Jones, 82, resident of 509 Greenfield Road, husband of Mattie Cornelia Whitten Jones, passed away August 6, 2017, at his home.

Born November 6, 1934, in Stillmore, Emanuel County, Georgia, he was a son of the late Ira and Ola Mae Sutton Jones.  He was retired from Milliken Mills, McCormick Plant.

He was formerly a member of White Hall Church of God and attended Harbor of Hope Ministries.  Mr. Jones was a member and Past Chief of the McCormick County EMS, and a former member and Past Chief of Sandy Branch Volunteer Fire Department.

He was an avid deer hunter and loved with a passion each and every one of his grand and great grandchildren. 

Surviving in addition to his wife of 62 years are three sons, Dr. Tom (Brenda) Jones of Cleveland, TN, Ira (Terry) Jones of Bogart, GA, and Kenny (Betty Carol) Jones of Plum Branch; three sisters, Wanda (Buddy) Byrd of Stillmore, GA, Willeen Newman of Swainsboro, GA, and Nita Partridge of Wrens, GA; a brother, Bill Jones of Swainsboro, GA; five grandchildren, Christina (Clay) Kile, Brian Jones, Shannon (Chad) Carnes, Cori Ann (Dan) Sherwin and Tyler Jones; and four great-grandchildren, David Kile, Camryn Kile, Margaret Winn Carnes and Nelia Carnes.

He was predeceased by a sister, Betty Akridge, and five brothers, Bobby Jones, Gordon Jones, Clarence Jones, Robert Jones and Ben Jones.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 Wednesday at the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood with Rev. Heath Easler  officiating.  Burial will be in Overbrook Cemetery in McCormick. 

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Akridge, James Akridge, Matt Jones, Ricky Banks, Johnny Deason, Jackie Edmunds, Terry Ferqueron, Brian Jones and Tyler Jones.

The family is at the home on Greenfield Road and will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to 2 Wednesday afternoon.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC  29646.
