Virginia James Dorn, 79, died Sunday, August 6, 2017, at her home in Greenville after a period of declining health.
Born on August 1, 1938, in Greenwood SC, daughter of the late Arthur A. (Red) and Edith Padgett James, Virginia was a stylish Southern beauty who caught the eye and captured the heart of Charles C. Dorn, an Army veteran just back from the Korean war. They married, had two children and, as he rose in his sales career, made homes in Greenville SC; Atlanta GA; Mobile AL; Fort Walton Beach FL; and Baton Rouge LA. Unexpectedly widowed at just 46, Virginia picked herself up and built a new home in Greenville, where she spent the remainder of her life.
Virginia never lost her sense of style, her quick wit, or her graciousness and charm. She delighted in her family and friends, the company of neighborhood children, and the antics of her newest granddog Arthur.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles C. Dorn; son, Charles Phillip (Phil) Dorn; and longtime companion, Jim Center. She is survived by her daughter, Jane A. Dorn of Greenville, and by her devoted caregiver, Kay Carter, whom Virginia described as “the very best friend I ever had.” The family is also grateful to Interim HealthCare Hospice for providing Virginia’s comforting end-of-life care.
Graveside services will be at 2:00 pm Thursday, August 10 at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, 3302 Highway 25 North, Greenwood SC 29649, led by long-time friend Scott Shuford.
Visitation is prior to the service from 12:30 – 1:30 pm at Blyth Funeral Home, 1425 Montague Avenue Ext. in Greenwood.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Virginia’s memory to Interim HealthCare Hospice, Box 12243, Greenville SC or Greenville County Animal Care, 328 Furman Hall Road #C, Greenville SC 29609, www.greenvillecounty.org/acs.
