Gilbert Curtis O’Bryan, 61, husband of Sherolyn (Brown) O’Bryan, of Greenwood, passed away Friday, September 1, 2017, at Self Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born on August 13, 1956 in Gloversville, NY, to his mother Susan H. Clark and step father Donald Clark, Gilbert graduated from Skaneateles High School in 1974; attended Rowan Cabarrus Community College and was an employee of the City of Kannapolis, NC, Utilities Department, where he retired in 2016. He and his wife recently moved to Greenwood to be closer to their grandchildren who were his heart. He has had 7 wonderful months with them sharing pizza dinners, pool parties and sleepovers which will be cherished memories for his family.
Mr. O’Bryan was a Vietnam War Veteran, having served 3 years of active duty in the US Army’s 101st Airborne Division. He later served more than 20 years in the North Carolina Army National Guard and Reserves until retirement.
Mr. O’Bryan was a member of Rocky Ridge United Methodist Church in Concord, NC, and an active member of the American Legion, Post 523, in Harrisburg, NC. He loved riding his Harley Davidson Tri Glide throughout the east coast and was a member of the Speedway HOG Chapter in Concord, NC. He was also a very proud member of the Patriot Guard Riders and was honored to serve at many services for fallen military personnel throughout North Carolina.
Surviving in addition to his loving wife of 41 years and his mother of Owasco, NY, are a daughter, Amie (Brad, Jr.) Thompson of Greenwood; his two grandchildren, Will Thompson and Dori Thompson both of Greenwood; step-sister, Claudia (Dick) Howard of Kannapolis, NC; his nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Mr. O’Bryan was preceded in death by his father, Donald Clark and a brother Bradley Clark.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday at 10:00 AM from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Tam Wensil of Rocky Ridge United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Oakbrook Memorial Park with military honors.
The family is at the home of his daughter and will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 4:00 to 5:00 PM.
Pallbearers will be Raymond Holmes, Travis Howard, Caleb Hogg, James Straughn, Trey Vinson and Brad Thompson Sr.
