Curtis Ward Gunnells, 91, former resident of Roman Circle, husband of Edna Griffin Gunnells, died Monday, October 2, 2017 at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson.
Born in Greenwood, December 20, 1925, he was a son of the late Rufus B. and Clotyse Hurt Gunnells. Curtis was a 1943 graduate of Greenwood High School, a graduate of the Greenwood College of Commerce and was a US Army Veteran of WWII. He formerly owned and operated Curtis Gunnells Builders and retired from Piedmont Technical College as head of the Construction Management Department.
A member of Jordan Memorial Baptist Church for 65 years, Curtis faithfully served the church as Deacon, Chairman of the Deacon Board, Church Treasurer for many years and taught in all age groups of the Sunday School Department.
Surviving in addition to his high school sweetheart, wife of 71 years of Greenwood are a daughter, Nira and husband John Daleda of Surfside Beach and a son, Barry and wife Ginny Gunnells of Greenwood; grandchildren, Chad Gunnells and Kea and husband Eric Blevins; great-grandchildren, Eva Cook and Ethan Blevins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11AM Thursday from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Carroll Leopard and Rev. Jack Mullinax officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Chad Gunnells, Eric Blevins, Ethan Blevins, Barry D. Gunnells, Colin Gunnells, Bill Sherrer, Phil Risinger and Joe Rollison.
Honorary pallbearers will be George and Nancy Ferqueron, Jack and Karen Spear and Fred Duff.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 6:30 Wednesday afternoon.
