Fred Alewine, Jr. - Greenwood

Fred Herbert Alewine, Jr., 95, resident of Emerald Gardens, formerly of Dry Branch Ct. and Lake Shore Drive, widower of Miriam Ficklin Alewine, passed away October 8, 2017, at Hospice House.

Born March 19, 1922, in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Fred Herbert, Sr. and Clara Bridges Alewine.  He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and was a US Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II, in which he served as a glider pilot.  Mr. Alewine retired as Regional Manager of Rhodes Furniture after which he served as credit manager for T.E. Jones Furniture for more than 17 years.  He also retired from the S.C. National Guard with more than 30 years service.

He was a former Trustee of Greenwood School District 50 and the former chairman of the Greenwood County Council.

A member of Main Street United Methodist Church for over 60 years, he was also a member and former teacher for more than 50 years of the Mason SundaySchool Class.  Fred was the last World War II Veteran of the Star Fort Veterans, Military Officers Association of America.   

Surviving are a daughter, Allison Alewine of Cape Cod, MA; a son, Rev. Barrett and wife Martha Alewine of Greenwood; a sister, Mary Claire “Pig” Driggers of Greenwood; a brother, Rev. James Alewine of Summerville; five grandchildren, Elizabeth (Aaron) Belcher, Katharine (Stephen) Cebik, Rebecca (Melanie) Hook, Emily (Jessie) Kneece and Lauren Alewine; ten great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister, Betty Satterfield.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:30 pm Wednesday at Main Street United Methodist Church with Rev. James McCoy-Bruce and Rev. James Dennis officiating.  Private burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

Honorary escort will be members of the Mason Sunday School Class.

The family is at their respective homes and will receive friends in the church fellowship hall from 12:30 to 2:00 Wednesday.
