Samuel Eugene Whatley, 93, resident of Bruce Road, died Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Greenwood, July 8, 1924, he was a son of the late Pope Payne Whatley, Sr. and Vera Hollingsworth Whatley. Mr. Whatley was a US Navy Veteran of World War II, retired from Greenwood Mills where he was a member of the Quarter Century Club and was a longtime cattle farmer.
A member of Mountain Creek Baptist Church, he was also a member of the Woodman of the World, Cattleman’s Association and Master Mason of Friendship Masonic Lodge #25 and formerly volunteered with the Epworth Fire Department.
Surviving are a daughter, Barbara W. Reid of Greenwood; granddaughter, Kristi Elizabeth Cothran and a great-grandson, Michael Anthony Cothran, both of Clinton; two sisters, Irma Medlock of Greenwood, Peggy Cockrell of Saluda and two brothers, Payne Whatley of Edgefield and JB Whatley and wife Dot of Cayce. Mr. Whatley was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Parkman Whatley along with a sister, Helen Banes and two brothers, Paul and Alfred Whatley.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday, December 1, 2017, from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Hoffman and Rev. Melvin Brown officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Chris Folsom, Glenn Hubbard, Hilton Dodgen, Robbie Parkman, Mark Parkman and Dan Gorman.
Honorary escort will be Marion Medlock, Keith Cockrell, Larry Wash, Frank Witt, Joel Whatley, Steve Welch, John Wash and Chuck Wells.
The family is at their respective homes and will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 to 2:00 Friday afternoon.
