Bennie Sidney Moore, Sr.,88, of 412 Pine Tree Drive, Greenwood, husband of Wygenia Rush Moore, passed away, Sunday, February 4th, 2018 at Self Regional Health Care.
Bennie was born August 28, 1929 in Due West SC, to the late James Sitton and Willie Strickland Moore. Mr. Moore was one of the last great self-made men. He left school after the 8th grade to help support his family. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. In the 1950’s he developed an interest in cars and became a mechanic and eventually owned and operated several gas-service stations in Greenwood under the Gulf, Atlantic & Esso trade names. And operated a wrecker service too. As a hobby in his younger days, he raced stock cars on the local racing circuit.
In the early 1960’s he began moving Mobile Homes and in 1966 open his own Mobile Home Sales Business that is known today as Southland Homes, where he was the CEO. Southland Home is also the longest running, Independent Manufactured Home business in South Carolina. He & his wife Wygenia. worked in all of their businesses as co-owners for 60+ years. He was also an avid hunter, fisherman and farmer. In his later years he enjoyed relaxing in his little cabin by his pond every afternoon while watching Judge Judy and enjoying happy hour. He was proud of all of his children and his Grand Children where the apple of his eye.
He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Mason Sunday School Class. And was a lifelong Member of the Masons.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, of the home and three sons, B. Sidney (Angela) Moore, Jr., W. Marion (Nancy) Moore and Dennis E. Moore, All of Hodges, SC. A Grand Daughter, Dr. Haley Moore (Major Bernard) Rapp of St. Louis, MS. A grandson Ryan Tolbert (Samantha) Moore, of Pleasantville, TN. Two Sisters, Eva Poole, of Jacksonville Fla. and Eleanor (Frank) Hodges, of Hodges SC. And one Great Grand Child, Bernard J. Rapp IV of St. Louis MS.
He was pre-deceased by two brothers, Jessie Moore of Edgefield and Jimmy Moore of Belton and a sister Evelyn Moore.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Wednesday at Main Street United Methodist Church with The Rev James McCoy-Bruce officiating.
Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Hugh Lesley, Bobby McCord, Jim Miller, Glenn Miller, Mickey Young, Kenny Poston, Bill Tinsley, Ken McClendon and Joe Langley.
Honorary escort will be The Mason Sunday School Class, his caregivers, along with Cleo Goings and his life-long employee and friend, Tommy Chiles.
The family is at the home on Pine Tree Dr. and will receive friends at Blyth Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening.
The Moore Family would also like to express their appreciation to Hunter Busbee, Annie Blocker, Katonya Parker, Arlene Morgan and Jenny Boggs for assisting in Mr. Moore’s care over the last few months.
