Betty Van Fleet Shelly - Greenwood

Betty Van Fleet Shelly, 94, wife of Donald Lon Shelly, resident of 1110 Marshall Rd., died Monday, March 26, 2018 at Wesley Commons Healthcare Center.

Born February 20, 1924 in Romney WV to the late William Arthur and Josephine Harmison Van Fleet, she was a graduate of Charleston School of Commerce in Charleston, WV. Betty taught at West Virginia School for the Blind and later retired from Newport News Ship Building & Dry Dock where she served as the Secretary to the Superintendent of the Foundry Division, the company that built the U.S.S. Yorktown in 1943, which her husband served on in the Navy.

She was a member of Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church.

Surviving other than her husband of 30 years of the home, are her nephew, who was more like a son, William F.”Butch” Kuykendall and his wife Mary of Winterport, MD, her step son, Donald Lon Shelly, Jr. and his wife Cora of Manchester, NH; her great nephews, Adam and wife Kae Kuykendall, and Samuel Kuykendall; her great great nieces, Lucy and Mave Kuykendall; and 3 step grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sisters; Eulalah Harris and Mary K Whipp.

A Celebration of Life service will be conducted Monday, April 9th at 2:00 PM from Asbury Hall at Wesley Commons with Rev. Kathy Hudson officiating. A private family committal will be held prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Wesley Commons, 1110 Marshall Road, Greenwood, SC 29646, or to HospiceCare of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC 29646.
