Marjorie Byrd Todd - Greenwood SC

Marjorie Byrd Todd, 91, formally of Greenwood, SC, passed away peacefully on May 4th of 2018 at Somerby Assisted Living in Mount Pleasant, SC.

Marjorie was born in Columbia, SC, grew up in Cross Hill, SC, and was the daughter of Reverand James Hawley and Estelle Sims Byrd.

Marjorie attended Winthrop College and then graduated from Presbyterian College. She taught school and coached basketball for several years before coming to Greenwood, SC, as the bride of Albert Creswell Todd, Jr., after his service in the Navy and graduation from Princeton. They had three children.

A devoted mother and active member of the community, Marjorie served on the Greenwood Women’s Club Board, the Greenwood Garden Club Federation Board (was named their Woman of the Year in 1991), Greenwood Mental Health Board, and South Carolina Board of Hospital Volunteers. She was a devoted volunteer at Self-Memorial Hospital from 1988-2011. She was a charter member of Holly Garden Club and was also a member of Dans de Noel Assembly, the Mt. Ariel Chapter of DAR, and a member of Community Bible Study (CBS) in Greenwood.

She was a dedicated member of Westminster Presbyterian Church (now Rock Presbyterian Church, ECO) for decades where she served as an elder, choir member, Sunday school teacher, and enjoyed being actively involved in the family life of the church. She was designated an Honorary Life Member of Presbyterian Women. When she relocated to Mount Pleasant, she became a member of The Church at LifePark.

After the death of her husband, Albert, in 1988, Marjorie stayed busy traveling the world and nearly all fifty states. She was a dedicated grandmother to her ‘10 Grands’ and was famous for her ‘Markie Cookies’ and funeral salad. She also loved to dance and watch the Clemson Tigers.

She moved to Wesley Commons at age 75 and enjoyed participating in nearly every social activity available. Marjorie relocated to the Somerby Retirement Community in Mount Pleasant, SC, in 2011.

She was preceded in death by her eldest son, Albert Creswell Todd, III (Debbie Todd Jones), and is survived by her children, Ann Todd Nodtvedt (Paul) of Mount Pleasant, SC, and James L. Todd (Harriet) of Charlotte, NC. Her grandchildren are Andrew Creswell Todd (Sarah), Anna Todd Majure (Chris), David Hardwick Todd (Lilla), and John Sims Todd (Wimberly) of Columbia, SC; Matthew Paul Nodtvedt (Tayler), Anna Kristine Nodtvedt, and Benjamin Todd Nodtvedt (Katie) of Mount Pleasant, SC; and Sarah Todd LeBlanc (Jim) of Columbia, SC, James Lawrence Todd, Jr., of Raleigh, NC, and Rebecca Lynn Todd of Brooklyn, NY. She also is survived by her 14 great-grandchildren.

The family is deeply grateful for the staff of the Somerby Assisted Living Facility and the Roper Care Physician Partners who so graciously cared for Marjorie.

The funeral will be held at Rock Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, May 8th at 2:30 p.m., with a visitation an hour before services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Rock Presbyterian Church of Greenwood, SC and The Church at LifePark in Mount Pleasant, SC.
