Mr. Willie McLaughlin Jr. 90, widower of Flora Graves McLaughlin entered into eternal rest on June 9, 2018 at the home of his daughter in law, Mildred McLaughlin 1604 Evans Pond Road, Greenwood, SC.
He was the oldest of eight children reared on the farm of his parents, Adornia and Bertha Davis McLaughlin in Dillon, SC. Upon graduation from Friendship High School and Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill, SC, McLaughlin entered the Unites States Army in 1946 and served for six years which included a tour of duty in Korea for 14 months, Upon returning home he enrolled at South Carolina. Upon returning home he enrolled at South Carolina State College and earned a B.S. degree in Agricultural Education and a Masters Degree in Education. He also completed advanced studies at Clemson University. Mr. McLaughlin spent a career teaching Agricultural Education and Horticulture at Brewer High School, Greenwood High School and the Greenwood Career Center. He retired in 1987 with 35 years of service. He has been actively involved with SC State University and the National Alumni Association since has graduation in 1956, serving as vice president of the National Alumni to Dr. James Bonds. He also served as parliamentarian, homecoming chairman and president of the Greenwood Alumni Chapter. He currently serves as the chapter's treasurer. McLaughlin is also actively involved in the State Club having served as vice president when it was initially organized. Mr. McLaughlin has held member ship and offices in many professional organization to include: The Greenwood County Retired Teachers Association, The SC Agricultural Teachers Association, Greenwood Chapter AARP, past Post Commander and Post Adjutant with the American Legion, Post 224 in Greenwood, SC and past State Commander of the American Legion. He currently serves as vice chair of National Security for the national America Legion. Finally, Mr. McLaughlin is Keeper of Finance for Epsilon Gamma Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He was an active and faithful member of Trinity UM Church where he is Lay Speaker and chairman of the Church Administrative Council Mr. McLaughlin was preceded in death by his wife, Flora , a daughter Geraline McLaughlin and two sons, Ronne and Bruce McLaughlin. Surviving are his daughter in law and caregiver, Mildred McLaughlin of the home, a son, Willie Williams(Yvonne) of Bennettsville, SC; a brother, Beaufort McLaughlin (Maggie) of Dillon, SC ; brother, in law Williams Graves of Dillon, SC; seven sisters in law Alice Lyman(Hilbert) of Trenton, NJ, Sarah Sellers, Ana Graves, Annie B. Dunson, Queenie B McLaughlin and Gladsy McLaughlin of Dillon, SC seven grandchildren, and a host of great grandchildren, 1 gg grandchild and several nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Services celebrating the Life of Willie McLaughlin, Jr. will be held 2 PM Thursday, June 14 at Matthews UM Church 800 Wright Avenue, Greenwood with Pastor Thessa G. Smith officiating and Rev. Dr Stephen Love presiding. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Flower bearers will be the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post #224 Honorary escorts will be members of American Legion Post # 224 " Mr. Mack" as he was affectionately know will be placed in the church at 1:00pm Wake services and Omega Rites will be held Wednesday evening from 6-7 pm at Trinity UM Church 528 Maxwell Avenue, Greenwood.
