Gus Latham - Greenwood

G.A. (Gus) Latham, 94, from Abbeville and Greenwood, SC, passed away on September 29, 2018 at Hospice of the Piedmont, in Greenwood, SC.

“Mr. Gus” as he was affectionately known by most was a deeply religious man who served the Baptist church in many ways: as a Deacon, a Sunday School teacher and a church planter - he donated property and helped create a mission church which he also served for many years in Abbeville. He was known for his ability to teach the Bible and he held classes in various churches and in his home.

Born in Abbeville, SC, in 1923, he was the son of the late Plumer Olin and Ella Long Latham.  Mr. Gus was married to Maude Mae Wilson Latham his beloved wife for sixty nine years who passed away in 2012.

He lived most of his life in Abbeville, SC, where he owned and operated Ace Hardware for many years before retiring.  He resided on Hill and Dale Drive, in Greenwood, until he moved to Brookdale Assisted Living.  He was a member of Hyde Park Baptist Church, Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Abbeville where he taught bible study groups for many years.  His love of Christ was in his daily witness and prayer life for others in need.  He studied The Bible passionately and was guided by its message and Prophecy.

Mr. Latham was a past Board member on the Clark Hill Russell Dam Authority.  He was also a veteran of WW2 serving in the Army Air Corps as a gunnery instructor on a B17 Bomber.

He is survived by his children, Linda Latham Dolny Lister (Ken) of Clinton, SC, Gus Latham (Peggy) of Alma, Ga., Jerry Latham (Alison) of Abbeville, SC, and John Latham (Jan) of Easley, SC.  Also surviving are 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, his brother, Clarence Latham, of Greenwood, SC, as well as, a large number of nieces and nephews and dear family friend Lynn Henderson.

The family would like to thank all those people who helped care for Mr. Gus during the last three months of his life: the staff of the Hospice House and Brookdale, friends and neighbors and his doctors.

Funeral Services will be at 1:00 PM, on Thursday, October 4, at Blyth Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Tucker officiating. Burial will follow at Oakbrook Memorial Park. Visitation will be at Blyth on Wednesday, October 3 from 6-8 PM.

In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations to Hyde Park Baptist Church, 330 West Deadfall Road, Greenwood, SC   29646.
