Arlene Charlotte Schmitt Overton, 90, resident of 115 Belle Rive Drive, widow of William Wallace Overton, III, passed away Friday, November 2, 2018, at Hospice House.
Born November 29, 1927, in Brooklyn, NY, she was a daughter of the late Nicholas and Julia Helen Versurah Schmitt. She was a 1944 graduate of Hempstead High School and married William in 1946. She and William raised their family in Uniondale, NY, where she served in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Brookside Fire Department for more than 35 years. They moved to Hendersonville, NC, after Mr. Overton’s retirement in 1982, and remained there for many years until moving to Greenwood.
Mrs. Overton was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Patricia O. Mackin and her husband Charles who was like a son, with whom she and Mr. Overton had lived for many years; two sons, William Nicholas Overton of Lavonia, MI, and Neal Michael Overton of Tampa; a brother, Thomas and wife Sally Schmitt of Yakima, WA; a sister, Diane and husband Sanford Scharf of Polk City, IA; five grandchildren, Matthew Overton, Nicholas Overton, Sara Overton, Daniel Mackin and Katherine Mackin; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Nicholas Schmitt and a sister, Joan Larsen.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted 11:00 am Wednesday, November 7th, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Timothy D. Tebalt and Deacon Francisco Onate-Vargas officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.
The family is at the home in Belle Rive at Lake Greenwood and will receive friends in the Church Social Hall immediately following the committal service.
