William Curtis Kinney, 52, resident of Highway 185, husband of Susan Whaley Kinney, passed away Wednesday, May 01, 2019, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born October 28, 1966, in Greenwood, he was the son of Betty Taylor Kinney Gary and the late Curtis S. Kinney. A 1985 graduate of Greenwood High School he was also graduate of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. Major Kinney was well known throughout our community as he spent many years on the front lines in the Uniform Patrol Division. Major Kinney moved up the ranks of GCSO from Deputy to Assistant Shift Commander, Shift Commander and finally Division Commander where he became a Member of the Command Staff. Major Kinney was also one of the founding members of the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office Bloodhound Tracking Team. Major Kinney served Greenwood County for many years devoting his life to serving his community as a law enforcement officer and leader before retiring from the Sheriff’s Office in 2014.
Being of the Baptist faith, he was also a member and past-president of the Hodges-Cokesbury Volunteer Fire Department.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home and his mother of Hodges are a daughter, Leslie Diane Summey and husband Brian of Greenwood; step-children, Lauren Greer and husband Jonathan, and Ryan Boggs, all of Hodges; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Rose and Bill Whaley of Greenwood; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mike and Terri Whaley of Anderson; and Sophie, his 4 legged companion and friend.
He was predeceased by his step-father, William “Bugs” Gary.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 pm Friday at the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Zebulon D. Young officiating. Burial with Law Enforcement Honors will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Chad Cox, Eddie Smith, Howard Corley, Troy Huntley, Mike White, David Pulley, Jimmy Jones and Jay Davis.
Honorary escort will be current and former members of the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Department along with members of the Greenwood County Emergency Services.
The family is at the home and will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:30 to 8:00 Thursday evening.
