Betty McCray - Greenwood

Barbara Elizabeth “Betty” Doane McCray, 91, resident of 206 Augusta Circle, wife of John D. McCray, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2019, at Hospice & Palliative Care of the Piedmont.

Born December 10, 1927, in Blountville, TN, she was a daughter of the late E.C. and Edith Akard Doane.  She was a 1946 graduate of Blountville High School and attended Graham Bible College. She was a devoted wife and mother who was active in the lives of her family and church and volunteered for many church and community activities including Lifeline Ministries Food Bank and was a diligent worker in the AWANA Program of First Baptist Church of Ninety Six. Mrs. McCray was also a long time poll worker in Greenwood County.

A member of First Baptist Church of Ninety Six, she was also a founding member of the Sunshiners Senior Group of which she was instrumental in its inception in 1985, and served as its President.  She also served as a Sunday School teacher for more than 40 years.

Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are three sons, David and wife Betsy McCray of Mocksville, NC, John F. and wife Sandy McCray of Dunn, NC, and Ted and wife Debbie McCray of Gastonia, NC; two sisters, Edith Faulkner of Abingdon, VA, and Patsy Baker of Blountville, TN; five grandchildren, Jason McCray, Amy McCray Stokes and husband Zach, Joel McCray and wife Bekah, Chad McCray and wife Shelley and Justin McCray and wife Amanda; eight great-grandchildren, Blake Stokes, Ellie Kate Stokes, Emersyn Stokes, Emma McCray, Bryce McCray, Luke McCray, Beckett McCray and Asher McCray.

Funeral services will be conducted 6:00 pm Friday at First Baptist Church of Ninety Six with Rev. Chuck Sprouse officiating.  Burial will be in the Tri-Cities Memory Garden in Blountsville, TN, at 2:00 pm on Saturday.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

The family will be at the home on Augusta Circle and will receive friends at the church from 5 to 6 Friday afternoon.

Mrs. McCray’s body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 4:30 on Friday.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church  of Ninety Six Building Fund, 205 North Church Street, Ninety Six, SC 29666.
