Samuel Paul “Sam” Riley, 75, resident of 205 Forest Drive West, husband of Sybil Gordon Riley, passed away early Saturday morning, August 26, 2017 at Self Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born February 19, 1942 in Hodges, he was a son of the late Eldred Allen, Sr. and Mattie Park Riley. He was a graduate of Ware Shoals High School, Piedmont Technical College with an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice and was a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He served in the US Army as a Military Police, stationed in Germany during 1964-65.
Sam began working with the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy in 1966 and was elected Sheriff in 1988 serving in that office until his retirement in 2004. In 1993 the Greenwood County Sheriff’s office received the award of Excellence by the SC Law Enforcement Association and in 1998 Sheriff Riley was named Sheriff of the year by the SC Sheriff’s Association. After his retirement in 2004 he joined the staff of Blyth Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
A member and church treasurer of Harris United Methodist Church, he was also a member and past president of the SC Sheriff’s Association, the Greenwood Lions Club, American Legion Post # 20 and was recognized by the SC Department of American Legion in 1986 as Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 49 years of the home are a son, Warren Paul Riley of Texas; grandson, Tanner Nicholas Riley and granddaughter, Delta Claire Riley who make their home with their mother, Heather Riley in Lake Lure, NC; three sisters, Willie Ridgeway of Suwanee, GA., Helen (John) Rhoden of Hampton and Susan (Bill) Dodson of Greenville; three brothers, Robert Hugh Riley, G.B. (Vivian) Riley all of Hodges and Russell (Tonie) Riley of Ware Shoals; numerous nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Manettia (Jerry) Broughton of Lancaster and two brothers-in-law, Ray (Marilyn) Gordon of Charlotte and John Gordon of Lancaster. He was predeceased by a sister, Georgia Riley Mackey and two brothers, Walter B. Riley and Eldred Allen Riley, Jr.
Funeral services will be conducted 11AM Tuesday from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. J. William Harris and Rev. Tim Jones officiating.
Family burial will be in Walnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Hodges prior to the service.
The family is at the home in Timberlake and will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 5:30- to 8PM.
