Xtreme Technology competition at Benedict College

On November 9th, 2012, twelve students, two teams of 6 students each, left G. Frank Russell Career Center for the Xtreme Technology competition at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina.

Team 19 consisted of Jody Bartanus, Kenny Christian, Samuel Sutton, Jailyn Morton, Amanda Ritenour, and was lead by team captain Wesley Clark. Team 6 consisted of Jan Acewicz, Johnathan Leopard, Rachel Minor, Mesha Triplin, Allison Wright, and was lead by team captain Quincy Tennant. 

The teams competed against 24 other teams in eight different categories. The categories are as follows, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Biology, Environmental Engineering, and Transportation Technology. 

Team 19 placed second in Physics and Engineering, third in Biology and Mathematics and 5th overall out of the 26 teams competing. Team 6 placed first in Environmental Health Science/ Environmental Engineering, 4th in Physics and 10th out of the 26 teams.

In preparation for the Competition the teams studied “Google/Bing Search Engine Commands”, “Gene Cloning”, “TLC”, “Algebra II”, “Archimedes’ Principles”, “Polarizability and solubility”, “theoretical Knowledge about colored organic compounds”, and “Applications of Quadratic Functions in the real World”.

The competition began with a Welcoming Ceremony hosted by Dr. Samir S. Raychoudhury, Dean of the School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).  The Computer Science section consisted of a 4- page packet with a multitude of questions that could be answered and found through the search engines.
