Lander men's basketball takes on Young Harris

Junior Darius Carrier scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Lander men's basketball team in Monday afternoon's 82-72 Peach Belt Conference loss to Young Harris College.

Young Harris improves to 12-3 overall and 7-1 in the PBC, while Lander moves to 6-9, 1-7.

Carrier, who connected on 12-of-16 field goals, tied YHC's Vince Martin for game-high scoring honors. David Pruett added 17 points, five rebounds and five assists; Jareal Smith had 16 points and six assists; and Dermaine Smith 12 points and seven rebounds.

In addition to Martin, Malcolm Jackson and Frank Adams netted 19 and 18 points respectively for the Mountain Lions. Bryson Robertson added nine points and 13 rebounds

Lander connected on 31-of-57 field goals (54.4 percent), including 6-of-10 threes (60 percent), and 4-of-4 free throws.

YHC was 34-of-62 from the floor (54.8 percent), including 7-of-12 threes (58.3 percent) and 7-of-15 foul shots (46.7 percent).

After taking a 5-4 lead on a Pruett layup at the 18:07 mark of the first half, Lander stretched its advantage to 14-7 at 14:58 on a Carrier layup.

The Mountain Lions outscored the Bearcats 9-4 over the next two minutes to cut the gap to 18-16. YHC eventually tied the game at 22-22 with 9:11 left in the half, but Lander eased back out to a six-point lead (30-24) behind two Carrier buckets and a Dermaine Smith dunk.

YHC ended the half with a 12-2 run to lead 36-32 at intermission. The Mountain Lions opened the second half with an 8-0 run to go up 44-32 with 18:12 left to play.

Lander responded with a 16-5 scoring spree and trimmed the YHC lead to 49-48 with 12:53 left on a Jareal Smith three.

The Lions gradually eased back out to a double-figure lead and made it 74-63 on Jackson's jumper with 3:42 left to play.

After a pair of Dermaine Smith free throws cut it to nine points (74-65), Adams laid one in for YHC at 3:09 and the Lions would lead by double digits the remainder of the game.
