Lander baseball nationally ranked

The Lander baseball team, which went 3-1 last week, dropped one spot to No. 8 this week in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s NCAA Division II national poll.

The Bearcats opened the week with a 5-3 loss at Carson-Newman in a non-conference game, but came back and swept Flagler College in the Bearcats’ three-game Peach Belt Conference series by a combined score of 37-12.

This week, Lander will host Newberry College at 6 p.m., Wednesday in a non-conference game, then entertain Young Harris College on Saturday and Sunday in a PBC series.

Mount Olive (10-0) remained atop the poll and is followed by: 2. Delta State (6-0), 3. Tampa (6-1), 4. Catawba (10-1), 5. Cal State-Chico (8-0), 6. USC Aiken (8-1), 7. West Florida (8-1), 8. Lander (8-2), 9. Central Missouri (6-1), and 10. Minnesota State-Mankato (0-0) and Indianapolis (2-0).

Franklin Pierce (0-0) is No. 12 and is followed by: 13. St. Mary's (8-3), 14. Grand Valley State (0-0), 15. Angelo State (8-3), 16. UNC Pembroke (9-0), 17. St. Cloud State (4-1), 18. UC San Diego (8-3), 19. Alabama-Huntsville (9-2), and 20. Belmont Abbey (8-0-1).

Rounding out the poll are: 21. Sonoma State (6-2), 22. Southern New Hampshire (0-0), 23. St. Edwards (7-3), 24. Incarnate Word (9-1), 25. Cal Poly-Pomona (9-2), 26. Southern Arkansas (8-3), 27. West Chester (0-3), 28. Saint Leo (9-2), 29. Carson-Newman (7-4), and 30. Mercyhurst (2-1).
