Cole set to lead Hornets baseball

Jacob Lethco
Staff Writer

WARE SHOALS – When the head baseball coach position became available at Ware Shoals High School, Troy Cole knew instantly that he wanted the job. Cole, who played prep baseball at Greenwood High School prior to playing one season at North Greenville College in the 1992-1993 season, was hired as the new head man to lead the Hornets in the 2013 season.

“I know a lot of our kids from coaching travel ball in the past,” Cole said. “They wanted someone out here to show that they care about the game of baseball, and it shows with our kids. I don’t have the numbers that some other teams we will face will be able to have, but our kids show up every day ready to work and that’s what matters.”

With a roster that boasts only four upperclassmen, Cole said that his main goal in his first year is to be competitive in every game.

“We are really young,” Cole said. “If we do what we are supposed to do and play fundamental baseball, then we could be at the top of our region. Not saying that we will win the region, but I could see us competing for the region within the next two years.”

According to Cole, coaching has proved to be satisfying thus far for the Hornets’ first year coach.

“For some of these guys, it will be the last three or four years that they will play baseball,” Cole said. “If they can enjoy it, and I can make everything enjoyable for them, then I feel like I’ve done my job.”

As the Hornets prepare for the 2013 season, Cole explained that pitching depth has proven itself to be a strength of his young squad. If they are to be competitive, improving offensively will be essential to his team’s success.

“Pitching will be key for us,” Cole said. “We have enough arms to run out there pitching wise. They struggled a little bit hitting wise last year, and so we’ve been working on hitting more so than defense the past couple of weeks. If we are able to pick up the hitting a little, and play good fundamental defensive baseball, we will be competitive.”

Ware Shoals, congratulations on getting Troy. My son has played travel ball for him for the past three years. He has enjoyed every second, and grown leaps and bounds as both a ballplayer and a person. Troy is one of the best around. Get behind him 100% and he will take you where you want to go. Your kids will love playing for him.

Congratulations coach!
