Fall Junior Golf Program

The South Carolina Junior Golf Association is now taking applications for the Fall Team Series Golf program in Greenwood.  This 8 week program is an introductory golf program for girls and boys ages 5 to 12, featuring 3 instructional lessons and 5 play days at area golf courses. Laurens Touchdown Club kicks off

The Laurens County Touchdown Club will kick off the 2014 season with their first meeting on Friday, August 29 at 12 p.m. at Lakeside Country Club.

The club, whose aim is to “promote a spirit of cooperation and organization through a common interest of football,” recognizes local college and high school football players for their on-field achievements and accomplishments.

Eagles donate school supplies to Merrywood students

Seniors from the Greenwood Eagles football team brought a woman to tears Thursday morning. That woman was Debra Green, principal at Merrywood Elementary School, and she was crying after watching about 20 football players bring in book bags full of school supplies they purchased themselves.

YMCA Cubs 10U Baseball Undefeated Champions

The YMCA 10U Cubs baseball team won last nights championship play-off game to become the 2014 undefeated champions! Congrats to the Cubs!

"Girls Golf Rocks", free event for girls looking to play golf

LPGA Golf Instructor April Powers is hosting an LPGA "Girls Golf Rocks" event on September 20, 2014 at The Links at Stoney Point. The event will be from 10am-12 and is free to the participants.

New baseball organization looking for players

There is a new travel baseball organization starting up this fall in our area. The organization will be run by former professional baseball player James "Doc" Byers. The ages that Coach Byers will be concentrating on will be 8U to 17U.

Gators take second place at Carolina YMCA Swim League Summer Championship
The Greenwood Gators recenlty traveled to Pickens, South Carolina July 19-20 to compete in the Carolina YMCA Swim League Championships.  While the first day was a cold and rainy July Saturday, complete with a power outage, the Gators had several great swims.

Greenwood YMCA Gators making final prep for Summer Championship State Swim Meet July 19-20

The Greenwood Family YMCA’s Gators Swim Team is quite possibly the team to beat at this weekend’s Carolina YMCA Swim League Summer Championship. The team is riding a third place finish at the Winter Championship, their best finish in the current league format. Head Coach Tom Karel and Assistants Tyler Will, Kendrick Anderson and Christen Messer are headed to the Pickens YMCA this weekend with 43 swimmers.

ECE Track and Field athletes qualifies for AAU Junior Olympic District Qualifiers in Iowa
Four Emerald City Elite Track and Field athletes have made it to the AAU Nationals held in Des Moines, Iowa on July 28 through August 2, 2014. Congratulations to Javeon Lagroon, Tongelayah Lagroon, Gracen Price and Carrel Richards. Their journey began in Hopkins, South Carolina.

Team Rawlings places second in Nationals

Team Rawlings 9U recently placed 2nd in the Baseball Nationals tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC.  They defeated teams from Texas, New York, Florida, and Georgia to advance to the championship game.

Seniors represented area well in North South Softball Game

Tiaria Norman of Emerald High School and Anna Fennell of Ninety Six High School were both chosen to play in the North/South All-Stars games at the University of South Carolina Aiken.  The games were held on Wednesday June 18th and Thursday June 19th.  Both girls were major contributors to the 2A/3A North All-Star Team.

The Cambridge Academy Athletic Banquet was held on May 14, 2014. The banquet was held to honor student athletes in grades 5 – 12 who participated in Cross Country, Volleyball, Cheerleading, Basketball, Tennis, Track and Field and Golf during the 2013-14 academic year.

Elite 9 finish 2nd in major tournament

Elite 9 Baseball-Blue, a 13 and Under Majors baseball team based out of Greenwood, SC just returned from playing in the Omaha Slumpbuster and Omaha NIT, in Omaha, Nebraska.  The competition included a total of 219 teams from all over the country, 56 teams in their age bracket, and 24 teams in their division.

Abbeville 10U All Stars win Sub-District Tournament

The Abbeville 10U All Stars went undefeated in the Dixie Youth Sub-District Tournament this past weekend. They have advanced to the District Tournament which will be held June 27th through July 2nd in Batesburg.

GALL 8u All Stars advance to state

The Greenwood Abbeville Little League 8 and under earned their way to the SC State 8u tournament to be held in Irmo on June 26-30th.  The team’s record was 3-2 with a huge 4-0 victory over Easley in the last game.

Greenwood Red Sox win 12u GALL Championship
The Greenwood Red Sox won the 12-and-under Greenwood Abbeville Little League (GALL) Majors Division championship on Friday, June 6. The Red Sox finished as regular season champions with a record of 11-1 and also tournament champions, winning all three of their games.

Drew Seymour signs with Brewton-Parker College

Drew Seymour of Lincolnton, Ga., recently signed a scholarship contract in the school’s media center in the presence of family members, friends, coaches, teachers and administrators.

After pitching and playing first base for the Red Devils, he will pitch for the Barons at Brewton-Parker College as well.

Greenwood youth becomes SC AAU Javelin record holder

Eleven year-old Carrel Richards captured the Javelin record by throwing his purple javelin 23.39m (76.09 feet) at the Junior Olympic District Qualifiers in Hopkins, SC on May, 31st. The previous record of 17.65m was set in 2013.
