GREENWOOD, SC – Following his team’s playoff loss against TL Hanna, Greenwood head coach Joel Vaughn said that he could not be more proud of his team’s season. After winning the school’s first Region championship since 1978, the Greenwood Eagles’ season ended against the TL Hanna Yellow Jackets Monday night at Eagle Park, 4-3.
“We had an outstanding season,” Vaughn said. “I told our kids that, as a coaching staff, we wanted to finish third in the region. They really overachieved and worked hard and surprised a lot of people.” With the loss, Greenwood finished the season at 16-11.
With the game scoreless in the bottom of the fourth inning, Greenwood right fielder Alex Rhodes led off with a walk. Tompkins Ramey followed with a single. After a Hamp Riley sacrifice bunt advanced Rhodes and Ramey to second and third, both would score on consecutive wild pitches. Peyton Leopard drew a walk and stole second. Leopard gave Greenwood a 3-0 lead when he advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.
TL Hanna would respond in the top of the sixth. Ben Bulware led off with a double down the left field line. After retiring the next two batters, Greenwood pitcher Hayden McCutcheon intentionally walked Clemson commitment Wales Toney, putting runners on first and second. Hunter King followed with a single, scoring Bulware. Chase McCrosky followed with a single, scoring Toney and King. Tyler Busby capped off a four run sixth inning with a single of his own, scoring McCrosky. Toney took the mound in relief of Yellow Jackets starter Matthew Ruth, allowing no hits in the final two innings and securing a TL Hanna win.
The Greenwood loss proved to be the final high school baseball game in the careers of seniors Alex Rhodes, Chase Pridgen, Tompkins Ramey, Hamp Riley and Joe Johnson, the first Greenwood High School senior class to win a Region Championship in 34 years.
“I told the seniors that, individually, none of them are the best players in the region,” Vaughn said. “But together, they were pretty darn good. They are such high character kids. I never had to worry about them acting crazy or partying. That’s what I’ll remember most. They are such good kids.”
